Polyurea Coating Systems

There are many industries that use polyurea coating systems, which include the following: Material handling and automotive industry. The automotive industry has utilized polyurea coating systems for over three decades now. The polyurea coating is popular for its high impact resistance, chemical resistance and many other physical properties. Polyurea has the ability to resist and even resist rusting and corrosion. Additionally polyurea spray coating systems offer very good fire retardant properties.

Polyurea coating systems have been the subject of much research recently and this research is resulting in polyurea coating systems that have better fire retardant properties than any polyurea coating systems available before now. This polyurea coating has the potential to prevent or at least significantly reduce the spread of fire in a working environment. It may be of interest to industrialists as an alternative to standard fire protection coatings like styrofoam, mineral wool and fireproofing coatings. Further, these polyurea coating systems may be able to improve the general efficiency of manufacturing operations.

Polyurea coating systems are available in several different application methods depending upon the application requirements of the user. While polyurea coating systems can be used for a wide range of surface preparation applications, most polyurea coating systems are effective for surface preparation with mildew on mildew resistant materials like aluminum and stainless steel. However, polyurea is generally used for surface preparation on non-flammable materials like copper and brass. This is due to the low thermal conductivity of polyurea and its increased resistance to alkali.

With polyurea coating systems, there is the possibility of trapping air bubbles in the mold. This helps in preventing the escape of toxic emissions during mold growth. Containment systems prevent external intrusion during mold growth and also help in protecting internal contamination of the containers during manufacture. Thus polyurea containment systems provide an added layer of protection for all kinds of products, be it food or product for personal or commercial use. It also helps in reducing the corrosion and damage of metal items.

The most common applications of polyurea coating systems are on ship deck liners, pipelines, pipe fittings, tanks, separators, storage tanks, industrial pipes, valves and similar concrete structures. For pipeline applications, polyurea coating provides the right level of protection against corrosion. As oils and chemicals frequently pass through these pipelines, they require the right level of containment to minimize the chance of an accident. A liner is obviously more cost effective than trying to repair the pipeline once corrosion sets in. Line-X protective coatings by Trend Micro have been successfully used for pipeline applications.

The manufacture and molding of polyurea products requires high quality equipment and formulators must therefore be experienced in the field. Formulators need to have a thorough knowledge of polyurea coating systems and its applications. The manufacturer should ensure formulators are trained in the proper application of polyurea systems and are able to explain the application process to customers. Formulators should therefore be trained on both surface preparation and fill methods. They should also be trained in manufacturing standards such as GMP and ISO. Expert formulators should be able to instruct customers on the correct maintenance procedures to ensure their products always meet quality benchmarks.
