Concrete Crack Repair Tips

Concrete crack repair is important, whether you are doing the repairs yourself or you are having them done by a contractor. Concrete is one of the most abused surfaces in the world, especially in harsh climates. Nearly every asphalt driveway needs some concrete cracking repair to stay looking its best or minimize the chances of a concrete slab failure. Whether you’re a homeowner shopping for new asphalt for your driveway or an asphalt contractor prepping your existing slab for a fresh coat, every concrete crack repair project requires some small cracks to be addressed or “repaired.” Whether you’re a homeowner shopping for new asphalt for your driveway or an asphalt contractor preparing your existing slab for a new slabs, nearly every repair project will call for some small cracks to be addressed or “repaired.”

Concrete crack repairs can take many forms, but they all have one thing in common. They are usually small cracks in a cement surface that won’t spread until some time later. Cracks in concrete are usually caused by road debris or weathering. For example, stones, bricks, and rocks that fall on the ground are held together by aggregate, a material that is made up of a mixture of different materials (gravel, sand, water, etc.) Most of the time, this aggregate stays in place with very little friction until it is required.

If the aggregate isn’t held in place properly, however, it can become cracked or break away from the underlying surface. Asphalt and other sealant providers often use a product called SCT (styrene caulk) to fill in cracks in concrete, providing a strong seal that acts as a barrier to moisture and water. This type of repair work is important to do before any decorative concrete leveling projects. After all, you don’t want to find yourself with unsightly and costly damage that will take a lot of time and money to repair.

When concrete cracks, it is important to address them before they spread. There are two basic options that you have for decorative concrete crack repair. The first is to fill in the crack and sand the area until it’s level. Since SCT is a flexible bonding agent that can be shaped into any form, you can even get creative and make a design imprinted on the affected area.

In addition to repairing cracks in your decorative concrete, you might also consider applying a quick set patch mix. The quick set patch mix is a highly penetrating and durable coating that can be applied after the repair has been done. The quick set patch mix can be applied over the existing surface and harden enough to then be shaped like a patch. Concrete repair can include a quick set patch mix to seal the repair and prevent it from becoming airborne when it cures.

Concrete repair isn’t always as cheap as some people think. Depending on the severity of the cracks and whether or not you choose to use a quick set patch mix or a coating for repairs, you may be looking at spending several hundred dollars on concrete crack repair. Fortunately, there are ways to save money. For example, if you don’t need repairs right away, don’t hesitate to wait and save money on your repairs by repairing small cracks at a time. You can still create a great design with these small repairs over time.
